Ultra-Fine
Differential Linear Positioners

The new models DF-1, DF-2, DFF-1
and DFF-2 differential micrometer heads are among the smallest commercially available differential
positioning devices. The new devices can easily be mounted to linear slides or stages including
Isotech's model 99 and 450 series subminiature multi-axis linear positioners using a finely threaded
barrel behind the moving positioning spindle. They provide accurate positioning of cameras, lenses,
mirrors, part locators, end stops and other devices requiring ultra precision alignment. These
linearpositioners are ideally suited for precision laboratory instruments, optical devices and
production machinery.
- Range of fine adjustment 0.040" (DF-1) / 0.020" (DF-2)
- Range of course adjustment .250" (DF-1) / .500" (DF-2)
- 254 to 1 reduction (DF) / 508 to1 reduction (DFF)
- Compact size 1 21/32" length x .450" diameter thimble (DF-1)
- Smooth, precise movement
- Separate coarse and fine adjustment
- Threaded mounting barrel
Coarse adjustment is accomplished
using a knurled ring operating a 40-pitch screw that moves the spindle 0.025" per revolution.
Fine adjustment of 0.004" or 0.002" per revolution is accomplished with an adjusting thimble
located at the rear of the device. The spindle has a hardened ball at its end to reduce friction
and wear. The adjusting differential is accomplished by the use of internal rings threaded inside
and out. The spindle is locked to the innermost ring, producing a gear reduction effect that
translates coarse movements at the thimble into fine movements at the spindle.
Total coarse movement is 1/4"
(DF-1) or 1/2" (DF-2), fine movement is .040" (DF) or .020" (DFF), and overall reduction is 254
to 1 (DF) or 508 to 1 (DFF). The DF-1 and DF-2 differential micrometer heads are available
separately or as an option with the 99, R99, 450, R450 series positioning stages.
The 99 and 450 series subminiature stages with the DF-1 or DF-2 differential positioners are
ideally suited for providing precise intermittent movement and location of virtually any precision
device. Standard mounting hole patterns are provided, allowing easy attachment of the devices
being manipulated.
